Hardware wallet manufacturer Trezor expanded its optional passphrase up to 128 characters on November 1, 2026. The deployment raises the previous 50-character threshold to deliver stronger protection against physical extraction and key reconstruction attacks.
The expanded limit functions inside Trezor Suite when paired with updated device firmware. Units running legacy builds will continue enforcing the historic 50-character ceiling until upgraded.
Under the BIP-39 standard, this optional security string is never written to internal persistent storage. Understanding precisely what is a passphrase remains essential for hardware wallet users, as the string acts as an encryption salt generating an isolated wallet structure.
Even if an adversary acquires the seed phrase, accessing wallet funds remains impossible without the correct phrase. Because any input variation generates a valid, distinct wallet, the client displays no syntax warning or invalid password alert.
Trezor cited the July 2026 security compromises affecting Coldcard hardware as direct motivation for this release. In that incident, insufficient entropy during seed generation allowed unauthorized parties to reconstruct recovery phrases.
Users who configured long, unique passphrases retained control over their holdings despite compromised base seeds. During that same operational window, researchers rescue 52 bitcoin through white-hat extractions before malicious actors drained vulnerable addresses.
The firmware rollout coincides with hardware supply chain alerts originating within Trezor’s retail distribution channel. Specifically, Trezor warns users to move their digital assets if their devices were purchased through former reseller CryptoBilis since March 2026.
The notice followed an alert from a buyer in Indonesia who discovered an unverified implant embedded within a Trezor Safe 5. The customer indicated that the rogue module could capture display information, including seed words, and broadcast it over cellular channels.
Trezor confirmed it has not inspected the unit directly and has not identified verifiable balance drains associated with the report. The manufacturer advised customers using units from the flagged batch to migrate balances to newly generated addresses.
