The general director of Gubakha Energy Company (GES), Andrei Kolesnik, refused to deploy a data center for mining on the basis of the Sarapul heat and power plant in Udmurtia because of its unprofitability and the lack of appropriate regulation of this business in the Russian Federation, Kommersant writes.
Aleksey Kolesnik considered the issue of creating a data center in order to modernize the heat node. However, according to him, the economic feasibility of this idea was not confirmed.
“Counterparties came to us and offered to organize farms at our facilities, but we refused because this type of activity is not regulated by law,” he added.
According to economist Dmitry Kleshchev, the refusal to place a data center at a power plant could have been caused by a fall in the cryptocurrency market.
“When the purchase was made, there were expectations of a bitcoin price of almost $ 30,000. And now everything is much worse. The power plant is old and requires modernization, so I suppose that the logic was this: to put mining at a higher cost and fight off the high cost of electricity, and make money for modernization, ”the economist said.
Recall that plans to build a data center for mining at a power station in Udmurtia became known in January.
