In 2020-2021, a single digital currency may appear in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Finance Alexey Moiseev, writes TASS.
“Since we have five members in the EEU (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia), respectively, the negotiations will take at least the entire 2019, and, probably, the input will be in 2020-2021,” said Alexey Moiseyev.
The digital currency will be analogous to the ECU, which was used in the European Monetary System of the EEC and the EU in 1979-1998.
Alexey Moiseev said that not only the members of the EEU, but also the partner countries of the union are thinking about the introduction of a single digital currency. According to him, the EAEU expert group is already working on the implementation of this idea.
“Inevitably, we need to move in this direction, because the difficulties in calculations are increasing. The number of organizations that are under sanctions is also growing. We have to respond to this by creating reliable international payment systems that are not tied to the US dollar, ” he added.
The Deputy Finance Minister also noted that blockchain technology will most likely not be involved in creating a digital currency.
Earlier, Tatyana Valovaya, Minister for Integration and Macroeconomics of the Eurasian Economic Commission, said that digital money would serve the digital economy.
