Peter Velle, a well-known Bitcoin developer and Blockstream company, has published two proposals to improve the first cryptocurrency protocol (BIP), which implies softforka to implement Taproot technology.

In recent years, the developers have published several separate proposals, including on the introduction of merklezovanny abstract syntactic trees ( MAST ), the signatures of Shnorr and directly Taproot. Probably, these updates can be combined in a single softforka , since the successive implementation, according to Vella, will be at the expense of efficiency.
The new BIPs describe the version of SegWit based on the signatures of Schnorr, Taproot, and Merkle branches, as well as the semantics of the script system. These proposals focus exclusively on the technologies mentioned and do not include other functionality that can be implemented independently.
The update code is available for review and edits in the repository on GitHub.
Details on the principles of work and the advantages of the signatures of Schnorr, Taproot and Mast can be found in the BlockchainJournal article:

Recall that in the framework of the previous softforka , the Segregated Witness protocol was implemented , aimed at scaling the Bitcoin network, reducing transaction fees and increasing the block limit. Its activation was preceded by fierce debates within the community and the subsequent split into two irreconcilable camps.
Earlier, the developers of Bitcoin Cash also announced the introduction of Schnorr signatures. The corresponding upgrade will take place on May 15th.
