Austrian banking group Raiffeisen Bank International formalized on September 23, 2026, a strategic partnership with Bitpanda. The corporate alliance enables regional network banks to introduce retail cryptocurrency trading directly within their existing digital banking applications across Central and Eastern Europe.
The joint technical infrastructure has the operational potential to serve 18 million bank customers. This rollout spans eleven national banking markets across the region, where the Austrian group maintains an extensive presence through retail branches and corporate financial services.
Rather than enforcing a centralized catalog, the group will allow subsidiary banks to structure their offerings independently. Each local entity will select specific digital currencies, determine local fee structures, and coordinate launch schedules based on local supervisory requirements.
Michael Höllerer, chief executive officer of Raiffeisen Bank International, stated that the group is addressing sustained demand for cryptoassets. Höllerer emphasized that the institution remains focused on fulfilling client preferences by connecting conventional account security with contemporary digital asset markets.
Technological architecture and distribution channels
The technical rollout is powered by Bitpanda Enterprise, a business unit providing modular digital asset infrastructure to traditional financial institutions. This structure expands institutional crypto trading access, allowing lenders to bypass multi-year software development cycles by integrating established order-routing and settlement systems.
Using application programming interfaces, network lenders can deploy a white-label custody architecture directly within mobile banking software. Retail customers can purchase assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum seamlessly, without navigating external exchanges or managing complicated private cryptographic keys independently.
A spokesperson for Bitpanda confirmed that the regional deployment is currently at an early stage. The operational timeline will advance gradually, with local rollouts scheduled as each participating bank secures regulatory clearance and completes end-to-end technical validation in its home jurisdiction.
The infrastructure provider stated that it regularly conducts exploratory discussions with European banking groups evaluating digital brokerage services. However, company representatives declined to comment on active commercial negotiations or confidential implementation timelines currently underway with other traditional credit institutions.
Regulatory supervision and institutional network reach
This initiative scales up an earlier 2024 pilot program launched in Austria. That integration began through an agreement with Raiffeisenlandesbank NÖ-Wien, marking the first time an established European Union commercial bank allowed customers to trade cryptocurrencies starting from a single euro.
Bitpanda operates as a licensed digital asset platform under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework. The firm maintains security certifications, including ISO 27001 standards, to meet the strict compliance and data governance requirements demanded by institutional banking partners.
The regulatory track record includes a 70,000-euro administrative fine issued by Austria’s Financial Market Authority in August 2026. The supervisory ruling resolved formal documentation timelines regarding whitepaper disclosures under MiCA, concluding without any disruption to client funds, custodial reserves, or technical operations.
The broad footprint of Raiffeisen Bank International provides significant distribution capacity across Central and Eastern Europe. Operational reports from mid-2026 show the group managing 1,300 active bank branches and employing approximately 42,000 personnel throughout its regional network.
Network banks that finalize regulatory notifications and technical testing are scheduled to publish localized asset lists during the fourth quarter of 2026. Those upcoming announcements will determine which member countries debut trading first and identify the initial cryptocurrencies available to customers.
