Yesterday, Binance, one of the largest crypto exchanges in the world in terms of trading volumes, experienced a hacker attack – the attackers managed to withdraw 7,000 BTC.
According to reports from the Binance team, hackers used a variety of methods, such as phishing and malware, to get hold of 2FA codes (two-factor authentication), API keys and other confidential information.
At present, it can be said that through one transaction, hackers managed to withdraw 7,000 BTC from the trading platform, which is approximately $ 40,705,000. In a publication from Binance, Changpeng Zhao, general manager of a crypto exchange, notes that Bitcoin funds were withdrawn from hot wallets, which contained only 2% of all BTC savings of the exchange. According to Zhao, other services have not been attacked.
Binance has stopped depositing and withdrawing funds, this is necessary so that experts can conduct a security audit – this could take a week. Binance users still have access to trading. Zhao believes that attackers can still control some user accounts, however, with the withdrawal option disabled, they will not be able to influence the market.
To cover losses, Binance representatives intend to use funds from the SAFU fund, which was established in July last year. Binance sends there 10% of the total volume of trade commissions.
