The future of artificial intelligence in the Russian Federation will now be determined by a specially created committee, which includes the largest stakeholders from various fields.

AI in Russia got its committee

The Technical Committee for Standardization No. 164 “Artificial Intelligence” (TC 164) was first assembled this Monday. Its task is simple – to develop standards and a regulatory framework for artificial intelligence.

Standards are needed to ensure that the end user of an AI-based product knows whether this development is in line with safety practices, main points, etc. For example, we can talk about unmanned vehicles driven by AI: in the future, when this direction gets global coverage, any underground Chinese office will be able to create software for such cars. Of course, to get into such a car would be dangerous.

The importance of the work of the committee is also evidenced by the fact that dozens of the largest departments, organizations and private companies have joined it. From the government it included the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Communications, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rosreestr, Roszdravdnazor, FMBA, and the Government of Moscow. Among the organizations are NRC “Kurchatov Institute”, PJSC “Sberbank”, LLC “Yandex”, JSC “Goznak”, JSC “Russian Railways”), the Skolkovo Foundation, the Foundation for Advanced Research and others.

In addition, the leading Russian educational institutions joined the work on the development of AI: the Government of the city of Moscow), educational institutions (Moscow State University named after MV Lomonosov, HSE, Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, St. Petersburg Polytechnic University Peter the Great, Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology.

Among other things, the committee sets itself a rather ambitious goal – to bring its standardization of artificial intelligence to the international level. This is necessary in order to eliminate confusion in which each country relies on its own standards. Whether he succeeds or not is a difficult question, so we will monitor progress.
