Emirates took an important step toward the adoption of cryptocurrencies within the airline industry. The airline announced that eligible residents of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) can now pay for flights and other services using digital assets through Crypto.com Pay, an integration that is already available on both emirates.com and the company’s mobile app.
The new option allows customers to pay not only for airline tickets but also for cabin upgrades, duty-free purchases, and in-flight services, expanding the use of cryptocurrencies beyond a simple booking.
For now, the service is limited to customers residing in the UAE who have an active Crypto.com account and make purchases denominated in United Arab Emirates dirhams (AED).
How do you book flights using Crypto.com Pay?
The process is simple. On a mobile device, the user selects Crypto.com Pay as the payment method and is redirected to the Crypto.com app to authorize the transaction. On desktop computers, simply scan a QR code from the app. Once the payment is approved, Crypto.com automatically converts the cryptocurrencies to AED at the current exchange rate, while Emirates receives the settlement directly in local currency.
Supported assets include Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Cronos (CRO), USDT, and USDC, although both companies have announced plans to add more than 30 cryptocurrencies in future updates.
The initiative is supported by the regulatory framework developed by Dubai for digital assets. Crypto.com operates the integration through its local entity, which holds a Stored Value Facilities license granted by the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates. This allows the service to operate under a regulated infrastructure, rather than a pilot or experimental scheme.
For Emirates, the integration also aligns with the Dubai Cashless strategy and the D33 economic agenda, which aim to accelerate the digitization of payments in the emirate by the end of 2026.
With this launch, Emirates becomes one of the first major Gulf airlines to offer direct cryptocurrency payments to local customers. The model eliminates one of the main obstacles to the everyday use of these assets: the need to convert them to fiat currency beforehand.
In addition, both companies have launched a promotion running through August 20, during which certain wallets will be eligible for 0% transaction fees on qualifying purchases.
Beyond facilitating flight payments, the partnership serves as proof that cryptocurrencies can be integrated into mass-market services without altering the user experience or forcing merchants to bear the volatility of digital assets.
