Payment companies Mercado Pago, Visa, Stripe, Mastercard and the eBay online trading platform have left the digital currency project Libra, the largest social network Facebook, according to the Financial Times .
“We respect the vision of the Libra Association. However, eBay decided not to move forward as a founding member. We are currently focused on introducing a managed payment option for our users, ” eBay representatives said.
In turn, Stripe said that Libra has a certain potential, but the company so far will focus on supporting projects that develop online commerce on a global scale:
“We will closely monitor the progress of the project and remain open for cooperation with the Libra association at later stages ,” added the representatives of Stripe.
Visa also said it will postpone its entry into the Libra Association for now:
“We will continue to conduct the assessment and our final decision will depend on a number of factors, including the ability of the association to fully comply with the mandatory requirements of regulators”
Nevertheless, the company emphasized that the potential of solutions based on blockchain technology exceeds the capabilities of existing payment systems:
“Visa's keen interest in Libra stems from our belief that well-regulated blockchain-based networks can add value to digital payments for a huge number of people, especially from developing countries.”
Calibra CEO David Marcus David Marcus wrote that he respects Visa and Mastercard’s decision to delay joining Libra to eliminate regulatory uncertainty.
Special thanks to @Visa and @Mastercard for sticking it out until the 11th hour. The pressure has been intense (understatement), and I respect their decision to wait until there's regulatory clarity for @Libra_ to proceed, vs. the invoked threats (by many) on their biz.

According to him, the release of such significant participants does not mean that it is time to put an end to the project. However, Marcus admitted that this is not very good news in the context of the short-term prospects of Libra.
I would caution against reading the fate of Libra into this update. Of course, it's not great news in the short term, but in a way it's liberating. Stay tuned for more very soon. Change of this magnitude is hard. You know you're on to something when so much pressure builds up.
