The U.S. Attorney's Office in the Northern District of California charged Elliot Ganton and Anthony Tyler Nashatka with hacking the EtherDelta exchange in December 2017.
According to the indictment , hackers changed the configuration of the EtherDelta domain name system in order to deceive the users of the exchange and “get their cryptocurrency addresses, private keys and withdraw the stored funds”.
Attackers gained access to the telephone number of an EtherDelta employee, using which they got into his email. This enabled them to access the DNS server and redirect traffic to a “fake website that resembles the real EtherDelta platform.”
The fake exchange website collected data on cryptocurrency addresses and private keys of visitors. The indictment does not indicate the total amount of funds stolen by hackers. It is noted that only one of the users of EtherDelta Ganton and Nashatka stole cryptocurrencies worth at least $ 800 thousand.
Recall earlier, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) accused the creator of EtherDelta Zachary Coburn in the sale of unregistered securities. It was also reported that the Chinese police are investigating the exchange.
