Segregated Witness (SegWit) was activated on August 24, 2017. The protocol eliminated a number of problems that stood in the way of Bitcoin, opening up opportunities for network scaling, including through the Lightning Network .

In particular, with the introduction of SegWit, the method of storing data in blocks of the first cryptocurrency was optimized, which made it possible to increase network bandwidth and eliminate the problem of transaction plasticity.

We add that recently the historic maximum at 10.18 trillion reached the difficulty of mining BTC:

Also, after the cryptozyme, the daily transaction volume indicator is restored:

As for the development of the Lightning Network, according to 1ML , now there are 9661 nodes and 36 575 payment channels in this network.

Recall, recently, SegWit creator Peter Velle introduced Miniscript , a new programming language to simplify the development of smart contracts for the Bitcoin network.
