Russian mobile operators will recognize users by face and voice. The solution is expected to work on the basis of the Unified Biometric System (EBS) from Rostelecom, Izvestia reports citing the company.
Initially, the EBS was aimed at remote identification and remote servicing of banking clients.
The system being developed for mobile operators is designed to accelerate the implementation of virtual SIM cards (eSIM). She will allow to conclude an agreement with the company without visiting the operator’s office.
To register in the system it will be enough to take a picture with a camera and say a few words into the microphone of a smartphone or computer.
Tele2 began testing eSIM in April 2019, but it was soon stopped early by the Ministry of Communications and the Federal Security Service. However, this month the ministry allowed Tele2 to continue the experiment.
According to media reports, the Ministry of Communications sent a letter to Russian operators on the need to adjust the regulatory framework. For example, eSIM owners should be able to switch between operator networks without visiting the company’s office, but in Russia the SIM card number is fixed in the subscriber’s contract.
The department did not comment on the initiative of Rostelecom. The Ministry of Communications noted that only Tele2 applied for permission to test eSIM. In addition, leading mobile operators also came up with a proposal to identify subscribers based on biometric data.
Legalization of eSIM in the Russian Federation will be discussed at a working meeting with industry representatives in October.
Earlier, the State Duma in the first reading adopted a law on the creation of a database of information about Russian citizens.
