New York Prosecutor General's Office: $ 500 thousand is not so burdensome for Bitfinex

Bitfinex Cryptocurrency Exchange and Tether company complained that they had already spent about $ 500,000 on the collection of documents requested by the New York State Attorney General’s Office (NYAG). Nevertheless, the prosecutor's office does not consider their demands too burdensome, reports CoinDesk .

Thus, in a letter to the court, the department notes that it requested from the defendants only that information which “must be in readiness from every responsible trading platform”.

We are talking about information on the issue and redemption of Tether tokens, current corporate, trading and client accounts, tax returns and information about customers who wanted to withdraw funds from Bitfinex, as well as lending data.

Representatives of Bitfinex and Tether say that to collect all this information, they had to attract about 60 lawyers and spend $ 500,000. Such costs are related to the fact that ten different communication systems were used to search for documents.

Nevertheless, the prosecutor's office stressed that companies still have to provide the requested information, even if the trial will be suspended.

Recall that in April NYAG blamed Bitfinex for hiding a loss of $ 800 million and covering it with Tether Limited reserves.

Prosecutors believe that the stock exchange served state residents and violated the Martin Law, but representatives of the site reject the charges. In Bitfinex, they are convinced that the state prosecutor’s office has no jurisdiction in this matter, since all Bitfinex clients are foreign residents, as stated in the user policy.

The trial continues to this day. So, July 29, a judge of the Supreme Court of the State of New York changed his mind to make a final decision on this case. This means that at least one more meeting will take place, and the court will continue to consider the case for the next 90 days.
