The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has launched an investigation into the BitMEX cryptocurrency derivatives trading platform, Bloomberg reported, citing anonymous sources.

The agency intends to find out whether BitMEX allowed Bitcoin derivatives trading to US citizens without registration in the CFTC. The investigation may take months, sources say.

On March 6 of this year, BitMEX updated its user policy, officially banning residents of the United States, the Canadian province of Quebec and some other regions from trading on the platform.

Note that the stock exchange is the object of criticism of the economist Nouriel Roubini, known as “Doctor Doom”, who is confident that the main profit of BitMEX is the liquidation of positions. In addition, he believes that terrorists and other criminals from Russia and Iran launder money on a large scale through this platform.

The confrontation between Rubini and BitMEX founder Arthur Hayes began with a recent conference in Taipei, where an economist publicly accused the exchange of manipulations, and also called cryptocurrencies the biggest mistake of our era.

Editorial BlockchainJournal contacted representatives of the site, but they declined to comment.

Earlier, Binance.com announced its withdrawal from the US market, promising to open a separate, regulated platform in this jurisdiction.

In the meantime, exchanges such as Poloniex and Bittrex are forced to conduct mass delisting due to pressure from regulators.

It should be added that another significant confrontation is the investigation of the State Attorney's Office of the State of New York regarding the Bitfinex exchange, which can be read in detail in a special article .
