Most of the 10 million euros stolen last year from the wallets of IOTA users has been restored with the help of law enforcement. The corresponding statement was made by the co-founder of the IOTA Foundation, Dominique Schiner, writes Reuters .
According to him, Europol played an important role in the return of funds – the organization initiated an investigation, receiving reports of hacking into the IOTA wallets from colleagues from the Hesse State Police.
As it became known, last week, Europol detained a 36-year-old resident of the UK on suspicion of stealing 10 million euros in IOTA tokens. To gain access to the wallets, he created a malicious website iotaseed.io, offering users to generate a seed-key, which was also transferred to its creator.
“As far as we know, it was not possible to find only a small part of 10 million euros. The exchanges blocked the hacker accounts. He tried to withdraw funds, but could not do it, ”said Shiner.
It is noted that the detainee British, whose name is not disclosed, had a "normal job and a decent education."
Initially, it was assumed that a hacker group was behind the burglary, but it was subsequently established that it was the work of a lone intruder. Now he is awaiting extradition to Germany, where he will appear before the court.
The first reports of the theft of IOTA tokens were received in early 2018. To create a secret phrase, users were asked to hold the mouse cursor several times on the screen, which supposedly allowed to “generate randomness”, after which they received a seed phrase that meets the requirements of the wallet.
