A court in Toronto confiscated bitcoins worth $ 1.4 million from a 30-year-old local resident Matthew Feng, accused of trafficking in arms and drugs. This is reported by the local edition of The Star .
After Feng admitted his guilt, the prosecution demanded to withdraw from him 288 BTC, discovered during the investigation in 2015 and estimated at that time at $ 88,000.
In turn, Feng said that part of this amount was obtained from trading on cryptocurrency exchanges.
The court considered the evidence of the prosecution sufficient to confiscate only part of the amount found.
“There is strong evidence that Feng used darknet markets to buy weapons, and also conducted large-scale operations related to the illegal sale of drugs. However, the court did not receive evidence that 7.23 BTC from this amount were obtained from criminal activity. Therefore, they are not confiscated, ”the decision says.
Thus, 280.77 BTC was seized from Feng. The publication notes that this confiscation of cryptocurrency has become the largest in the country.
Recall that in March, officers of the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Security Service of Ukraine arrested an organized criminal group , whose members were selling drugs for cryptocurrency.
