Head of Sberbank German Gref confirmed the organization’s refusal to develop the cryptocurrency direction, and also spoke about his own investments in cryptocurrencies on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in a conversation with NTV.
In particular, Gref stressed that Sberbank had never had “ambitious plans” to work with cryptocurrencies, and now the organization will focus on the implementation of the distributed registry technology in its services.
“We have never involved a large number of our clients in working with cryptocurrencies. We followed the customer. I am glad that HYIP left this market, and normal work with blockchain technology remained, ”Gref said.
It is noteworthy that the head of Sberbank called Bitcoin "a technical tool for transactional activity" and not an investment object.
In addition, German Gref spoke about his own cryptocurrency investments. According to the head of Sberbank, he bought bitcoins even when they were worth about $ 5, but he did not invest for accumulation, but made purchases of everyday things with them.
“I then made some purchases. Then, when he [Bitcoin] began to cost a lot of money, and I looked at these T-shirts that I bought, I realized that they cost me too much. Part lost with the codes. I'm not a casino player, ”said Gref.
Recall that Sberbank suspended its plans to work with cryptocurrency, it became known in late May. The reason for the refusal was the lack of a regulatory framework governing this area.
