Ethereum – Istanbul hard fork may be ported due to delay from Parity developers

The planned Ethereum hard fork called Istanbul can be postponed due to the Parity team’s unwillingness to deploy key upgrades to the Ropsten test network at the indicated time. About this with reference to the words of company representatives Trustnodes writes.

Activating Istanbul on the test network should be the last step before launching the update on the main network. However, Parity developer Wei Tang said:

“To complete the implementation of [upgrades], we need time until September 6th. The reason is not only that we late adopted the [necessary] EIPs, but also because we carry out large-scale processing of the code structure. ”

The publication notes that the block number for launching the upgrade in the test network was to be determined last Friday, August 23. However, now there was an unpleasant delay for everyone.

Thus, the upgrade of the Ethereum core network, which was supposed to take place in early October before the Devcon5 conference in Osaka, is also jeopardized. According to Trustnodes, in this situation, a hard fork can be rescheduled until November. Much will depend on how quickly the Parity team solves the challenge.

To date, the Parity client uses about 21% of nodes in the Ethereum network. The most popular Geth client accounts for 76% of all nodes. To date, the latter has already implemented all the necessary updates into its code base.

Recall that earlier in August, Ethereum developers approved the final details of the upcoming Istanbul hard fork. It is assumed that it will be activated in two stages. The first one will include all six changes (EIPs) and, according to the plan, should be launched on the Ethereum core network in October.

The second phase should be implemented in the first quarter of 2020. It will include changes that still require refinement and testing, including the new ProgPoW mining algorithm .
