
Chinese law enforcement officers opened a criminal case against a resident of Heilongjiang Province, who was convicted of stealing electricity from an oil production installation for bitcoin mining. To this end, he laid electrical cable along the bottom of fish ponds. This is reported by the local edition of the Global Times .
The police found a shed not far from the oil pumping unit, in which there were 20 mining devices for cryptocurrency. The building is surrounded by water from almost all sides, and electricity was brought to it from the junction box of the oil well with a cable that was laid through fish ponds.
The alleged theft of electricity was noticed by the head of the oil production department at China’s largest oil field, Datsin. It was he who went to the police to investigate the incident.
On the fact of the investigation, which was carried out, including with the help of a drone, law enforcement officers opened a criminal case against the owner of bitcoin miners. Preliminary damage from electricity theft is estimated at 48,560 yuan ($ 7,015).
