The Washington District Attorney's Office has charged a Singapore citizen with stealing computing power and cloud mining services for cryptocurrency mining for a total of $ 5 million. Together, he faces up to 32 years in prison.
According to the prosecutor's office, Matthew Ho, 29, from October 2017 to February 2018, conducted a “large-scale cryptocurrency mining operation”, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. To do this, he leased capacity from several cloud service providers.
Ho opened accounts in cloud services using the stolen personal data of US residents, including the well-known video game developer from California. In fraudulent ways, an attacker increased account privileges, which gave access to more power and increased the billing delay.
Before the discovery of the fraud, the accounts of the California developer managed to pay several bills.
According to the prosecutor's office, as a result, Ho consumed $ 5 million of computing power and services for cloud services for free. It is also noted that for some time the attacker was one of the largest consumers of Amazon Web Services (AWS) in terms of data usage.
Matthew Ho is arrested by Singapore police, where a case has also been opened against him.
Recall that in Russia, a criminal case against engineers who mined bitcoins on the supercomputer of the nuclear center in Sarov has already been submitted to court , and one of the defendants was sentenced to a fine of 500 thousand rubles.
