Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has partnered with UK police to investigate £ 41.6 million ($ 51.2 million) fraud, said Samuel Lim, chief compliance officer at the company’s blog .
The exchange helped the London Police Cybercrime Unit investigate a case against a Bulgarian citizen. He was suspected of creating and distributing phishing tools that were used against at least 53 web services visitors.
By creating clones of the sites of legitimate British companies, attackers using phishing scripts obtained private information from customer services. This data was then sold on the darknet.
According to Lim, about 500 thousand people became victims of phishing attacks.
The offender was extradited from Bulgaria to the UK, where he appeared in court. The defendant pleaded guilty to five cases of fraud and was sentenced to nine years in prison.
“We are satisfied with the outcome of this case and are proud to have helped achieve justice in those involved ,” Lim wrote.
Recall, on September 23, it was reported that the British police auctioned cryptocurrency in the amount of about $ 621 thousand, confiscated earlier.
