Media: Telegram's new blocking technology could cost Russian taxpayers $ 20 billion
Roskomnadzor may introduce a new technology to combat banned sites and services, one of which is the Telegram messenger, already in 2019. The Russian authorities are allegedly willing to allocate up to 20 billion rubles for the implementation of new developments, the BBC Russian Service reports, citing informed sources.
As the newspaper notes, a new technology is created on the basis of deep packet analysis or DPI. Internet providers presumably use special software and hardware to analyze traffic, isolate and delete packets, specific to specific sites or applications, in this case forbidden.
Now Roskomnadzor does not actually fight against Telegram due to the inefficiency of the tools at hand, according to BBC sources, however, DPI-based technology will allow the department to drastically change the balance of power and resume pressure.
Laboratory tests allegedly began in August and already in November were deployed in one of the Russian million-plus cities, the newspaper writes.
The legal basis, noted in the BBC, will be a bill of December 14, submitted to the State Duma by senators Andrei Klishas, Lyudmila Bokova and deputy Andrei Lugovoy.
Recall, Telegram raised about $ 1.7 billion for the development of the blockgram project Telegram Open Network and its native cryptocurrency Gram, which became one of the most discussed initiatives of the year.
