Russia refused to transfer military frequencies to mobile operators for the development of 5G

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a Security Council resolution on the refusal to allocate 3.4-3.8 GHz frequencies necessary for operators to develop 5G in the country. Vedomosti writes about this with reference to sources familiar with the situation.

According to experts, the range of 3.4-3.8 GHz is the most popular for 5G in the world, since in most countries it is the lowest of the free bands in which broad spectra can be distinguished. In many countries, this range has become a priority when developing smartphones and other devices.

In April 2019, Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov asked Vladimir Putin to give instructions on clearing the frequencies 3.4-3.8 GHz for 5G. The current refusal is due to the fact that the key users of the range are the Ministry of Defense and Roscosmos.

Now the government is studying the possibility of Russian industry to work with frequencies of 4.4-4.99 GHz, which was previously proposed by the Ministry of Communications. This range is popular only in China and Japan and is often used for on-board aircraft electrical equipment.

Representatives of the Megafon and Tele2 operators indicate that in Russia there are not enough subscriber devices for the 4.4-4.99 GHz band, which is why it will become massively available only in 5-7 years.

Recall, in July, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to strengthen cooperation in the field of legislative regulation of activities in the information space. In particular, the agreement stated the inadmissibility of restricting the Internet and the Russian technology market from high-tech products.
