Russia may abandon foreign servers when introducing 5G. This threatens local corruption

The Presidium of the Government Commission on Digital Development approved the proposal of the Russian authorities to use domestic equipment to launch 5G networks. The initiative is described in a wireless technology roadmap developed by a subsidiary of Rostec.

In particular, the document says that during the construction of 5G networks, mobile operators should use “public servers of Russian design based on a trusted electronic component base”.

As the compilers of the roadmap explained, we mean ordinary servers that IT companies use.

“In the construction of networks, such equipment was not used before, but in recent years, operators prefer it more and more often, since it is cheaper. It will also reduce the risks if foreign manufacturers refuse to supply equipment to Russia due to sanctions, ”the authors of the document added.

However, according to representatives of the mobile operator MTS, the roadmap talks about new equipment, and now there are no such devices either in Russia or abroad.

A new initiative by the Russian authorities could lead to stagnation in the wireless market, said the head of the public organization RosKomSvoboda Artem Kozlyuk.

“In my opinion, forced import substitution, based only on the fact that“ it should be cheaper ”, can lead to sad consequences and absurdity in the form of gluing nameplates“ made in Russia ”on products manufactured outside our country. For any market, competition is the blood of technological progress and development, and artificial restrictions and obstacles can lead to stagnation, poor quality of the original product and corruption schemes, ” he said in a comment to BlockchainJournal.

The idea of replacing foreign technologies with domestic counterparts is not new for the Russian authorities, adds Alexander Isavnin, a member of the public organization RosKomSvoboda.

“Progress cannot be stopped, but it will most likely be slower and more expensive. Like the rest of the Internet and IT in Russia, it is slowed down by regulation. But most of all, the development of 5G now slows down the desire of the military to sit on the most popular radio frequencies in the world, ”said the expert.

The pilot implementation of 5G networks in the Russian Federation will take place in five million-plus cities by 2021. The cost of the project will be about 650 billion rubles.

Recall, in August, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a resolution of the Security Council on the refusal to allocate the frequencies 3.4-3.8 GHz needed for operators to develop 5G in the country due to the fact that the key users of the range are the Ministry of Defense and Roskosmos.
