There is no limit to the ingenuity of online scammers. So, a study of ZenGo cryptocurrency wallet developers showed that four out of five results in a Google search for “bitcoin qr generator” lead to sites created by scammers, Cointelegraph writes.

The company came to the appropriate conclusions in the process of finding a solution that would allow it to implement support for QR codes in its wallet.

“These sites generate a QR code that contains the address of scammers, and not the one requested by users, thereby sending all payments from this code to scammers,” ZenGo representatives explain.

QR codes are considered one of the most convenient ways to send transactions, for example, when paying for purchases or services, as they eliminate the need to manually enter long combinations of letters and numbers.

ZenGo researchers also found that some of these fake QR codes are even capable of spoofing addresses that are on the clipboard. Other generators create addresses that look similar to those provided by users.

At the same time, the efforts of fraudsters are not in vain.

“Having calculated the balances of the scam-addresses that we discovered, we found that there is about $ 20,000 on them. We assume that this is only the tip of the iceberg, as fraudsters probably change their addresses in order to prevent themselves from being identified and blacklisted” , – added the researchers.

Recall that earlier in September , a fraudster was arrested in China, who fraudulently attracted users to use the cold wallet he created, thus stealing 200 BTC.
