An IT contractor from the Australian suburb of Killar will be brought before a court for modifying government computers for mining cryptocurrencies. According to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) , the damage from the actions amounted to an employee of more than 9000 Australian dollars ($ 6,184).
Last year, police have already searched the house of an Australian, from which they seized a laptop, telephone, employee IDs and data files.
The contractor is accused of unauthorized change of data in order to disrupt the functions of the system and unauthorized change of data with limited access. The maximum penalty for the charges is 10 years and 2 years in prison, respectively.
AFP acting head Chris Goldsmeade noted that crimes of this kind are considered “very serious”.
“Taxpayers trust officials to perform vital functions for the community with utmost honesty. Any alleged criminal behavior in which this trust is used for personal gain will be investigated and the perpetrators brought to justice, ”he said.
Recall that in October 2018, a resident of Kurgan was sentenced to five years in prison for breaking into servers of state bodies in order to mine Bitcoin.
