Repositories on GitHub have been subjected to a massive attack by bitcoin extortionists

Unknown hackers made a series of coordinated attacks on users of services for hosting IT-projects and their joint development GitHub, GitLab and BitBucket, as a result of which hundreds of closed repositories were empty, reports ZDNet .

So, the attackers claim that they downloaded the contents of these repositories to their own servers, and give 10 days to pay a ransom in the amount of 0.1 BTC under the threat of disclosing the stolen projects. According to preliminary data, 392 repositories were attacked.

In the meantime, service representatives urge victims to contact a support service before making transactions to the address of the extortionist . It turned out that in some cases deleted data can be recovered in other ways.

It is assumed that the main reason for hacking most of the repositories was incorrect storage of passwords by users and their unreliability.

At the time of writing the material at the extortionists did not receive a single payment in the specified amount.

Earlier, as a result of a DoS attack on the Electrum cryptocurrency wallet servers, hackers managed to steal $ 4.6 million.
