A phishing attack against the Electrum wallets may have helped steal around 245 BTC worth more than 880,000 US dollars.

Electrum representatives warned users about the attack by writing the following on Twitter:

The Electrum phishing attack continues. Our official site is https://electrum.org. Do not download Electrum from any other source!

The criminal organized a phishing attack by creating several fake servers on the Electrum wallet network. As a result, when users of the wallet connected to these servers and tried to translate Bitcoin transactions, they received an error message containing a link to malware disguised as an updated wallet.

A fake message created by an attacker (via the Electrum GitHub page) looks like this:

Reddit user published a Bitcoin address yesterday, which, he said, is used by the aforementioned attacker to consolidate a stolen cryptocurrency from several addresses used in the attacks. If this is true, then during the phishing attack 245 BTC were stolen, which at the time of this writing is 884,000 US dollars.

Electrum took steps to fix the problem and released a new version of its wallet 3.3.2.

It is worth noting that the number of cryptocurrency thefts is growing rapidly. According to a recent report by CipherTrace, about 1 billion digital assets were stolen this year.

And what do you think about this?
